Mike Trout’s wife Jessica gave birth to their first child, and the Angels superstar is expected to rejoin the club soon, manager Joe Maddon said Saturday.

Trout announced on Twitter that his son, Beckham Aaron Trout, was born on Thursday and weighed seven pounds, 10 ounces while measuring 20.75 inches. The infant's three initials spell BAT, though there is no indication that is intentional.

Trout, a three-time American League MVP Award winner and eight-time All-Star, was placed on the paternity list on Thursday and could be back in the lineup as soon as Sunday. The paternity list is three days, but the Angels have an off-day on Monday, so there’s a chance he could miss Sunday’s game. Maddon is hopeful he’ll be back.

“There’s a chance,” Maddon said. “That would be the optimal plan. I've already written things down to put him in the lineup for tomorrow, and that'd be so nice to be able to do that and get really close to the lineup we thought we'd have coming out of the second camp. I don't have that 100 percent, but I have anticipated him playing tomorrow."

The Angels have only played two games this year with Anthony Rendon and Trout both in the lineup, because Rendon missed the first four games of the season with oblique soreness. They’re also missing shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who is on the 10-day injured list with sprained left ankle. But the Angels remain hopeful he could return next weekend, as he’s eligible to be reinstated on Friday.

Ohtani ready for second start
Two-way star Shohei Ohtani's first start of the season was a rough one, as he allowed five runs without recording an out against the A’s on Sunday. It was Ohtani’s first start since Sept. 2, 2018 after undergoing both Tommy John surgery and left knee surgery. Ohtani is set to start again on Sunday and said talking with Maddon this week has helped him with his confidence.

“I had a good conversation with Joe the other day,” Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. “More than like mechanics or the pitching part, he told me to have fun, enjoy the game, just be yourself. Just do you. I thought it was a really good talk."

Maddon said he has also enjoyed talking with Ohtani as he tries to boost his confidence after a slow start. Ohtani’s power at the plate is starting to come around, but he’s still hitting just .148/.179/.407 with two homers, one double and seven RBIs in six games as DH.

“He's an exceptional talent and like everybody else, he's trying to get into that groove right now based on all the startups and stops that we've experienced this year,” Maddon said. “Plus, he has to do it as a pitcher and as a hitter, which makes it a bit more difficult. But I really enjoy him. He's a wonderful young man. He’s very respectful. I'm just really, really looking forward to continuing to do this with him. And I know as he gets comfortable on the mound and the batter's box, heads up, because he could really carry you for a while.”

Ohtani said he’ll need to make an adjustment mentally, especially without having the support of fans to get him amped up on the mound.

“Usually once I get on the mound, like all the pain and soreness and everything goes away and all the adrenaline kicks in,” Ohtani said. “But it wasn't like that last time. I guess the fans not being there was a big factor, so I need to make some adjustments to get locked in mentally.”

Maddon not opting out
Maddon, 66, was asked if he has thought about opting out of the season due to COVID-19 but said it’s not something that has even crossed his mind. He said he also hasn’t heard from family members urging him to opt out.

"I'm still wanting to believe in the methods in place,” Maddon said. “The program I've set up for myself and just continue to want to play it through. I have not thought about that one time. I was in touch with my granddaughter this morning in Pennsylvania. Of course, my wife is here. My cousin's back home. I've been in touch with a lot of folks back home, but it's been primarily about different family events."

Worth noting
• Second baseman Tommy La Stella was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Astros at Angel Stadium with neck stiffness. He's day to day. Luis Rengifo replaced him at second base and hit sixth.

• The Angels optioned reliever Kyle Keller to their alternate training site in Long Beach on Saturday and recalled reliever Jose Rodriguez. Keller made two appearances, allowing two runs over 2 1/3 innings. Rodriguez has yet to appear in a game this year but posted a 2.75 ERA in 19 2/3 innings in 2019.
